2020 Scholarship Winners

Braden Stern

Samuel (Braden) Stern is 15 years old and from Shenandoah County. He attends Strasburg High School and is currently a sophomore. He is a wrestler, as well plays football and baseball. He is an active 4-H member and enjoys competing in stockmans and livestock judging. He helps raise sheep, goats, cows, chickens, and pigs on his family farm. After graduating high school he plans to attend a 4 year university and major in business.

Camille Mitchell

Camille Mitchell is from Chesapeake VA she has shown livestock animals since she was in 3rd grade, but she mainly shows sheep and goats. She currently attends Virginia Tech is studying Animal and Poultry Sciences and plans on going to Vet school one day.

Chet Boden

Chet Boden is the 17 year old son of Michael and Ruth Boden of Clear Brook, VA. He began competing at the State Fair when he was 6, in the Lamb Costume class. Chet has raised and exhibited cattle, sheep, hogs and goats over the past 11 years at the State Fair as well as on local to the national level. Chet is an integral part of the family’s beef operation and also works part time for Hamby Haven Show Pigs. He is an active member of the Frederick County 4-H Livestock Club, where he has served in several leadership roles. In addition, Chet is a member of the James Wood FFA chapter and Virginia Jr Angus Association. Chet competes in Livestock Judging, Jr Stockman’s, and Meats Judging contests. Chet enjoys volunteering with the Olive Branch Food Pantry.

Carson Stern

Nicholas (Carson) Stern is from Shenandoah County. He currently attends James Wood Middle School in Winchester, Va. He is 12 years old and a member of the FFA and the 4-H. He enjoys playing football and baseball. He also competes in stockmans and livestock judging competitions. He helps raise sheep, goats, cows, pigs, chickens, and ducks on his family farm. He hopes to attend a 4 year university and own his own mechanic shop one day.

Gannon Long

Gannon is 10 years old and a 5th grade student at River Bend Elementary School in Elkton, VA. He enjoys showing goats and lambs and is part owner of a Registered Dorset flock.

Rockingham County

Grayson Long

Grayson is a Freshman at East Rockingham High School in Elkton, VA. She is an active 4H & FFA member who loves showing sheep and goats. Grayson's favorite animals to show are her Registered Dorsets.

Kennah Kerns

Kennah Kerns lives in Clearbrook, Va and attends James Wood High School! She is an active member of the Frederick County 4-H Livestock Club and her school's FFA! She shows pigs, lambs, goats, and in the past year has added cattle! She also competes in stockmans and livestock judging contests! She enjoys traveling all around to jackpot shows for all four species!

Kylie Blevins

Kylie is the daughter of Hayley Blevins and the granddaughter of Ed and Natalie Blevins of Abingdon. Kylie is a 4 th grader at Abingdon Elementary School. She is very involved in many community service projects and is a member of Washington County 4-H where she is involved in projects such as the country ham project. She is also a member of the Wythe County Livestock Club where she is actively involved in livestock judging and stockmen’s. Kylie competitively shows market lambs and commercial ewe lambs on a state and national level. This has given her the opportunity to meet people all across the United States. One of the biggest accomplishments for Kylie thus far was at State Fair of Virginia in 2019 when she exhibited the Grand Champion Market Lamb and won Junior Showmanship at nine years old. This was her first state fair. In 2020, Kylie was awarded Premier Exhibitor in the Junior Sheep Show at The State Fair of Virginia, another huge accomplishment for her. When Kylie is not working with her livestock and other 4-H projects, she enjoys playing Upward Bound Basketball and going to the gym. She is hopeful that this fall, basketball will resume and the pandemic will end. Kylie is very grateful and would like to sincerely thank the State Fair of Virginia for awarding her the scholarship.

Leah Greiner

Leah grew up in Christiansburg, VA showing sheep, goats, and pigs. Besides showing, she was very active in my 4-H club participating on our Stockmans and judging teams. She is currently a freshman majoring in Animal Science and International Agriculture with a minor in Agriculture Education at Iowa State University. She is very involved in the Block and Bridle Club and currently is serving as the Sheep Interest Group Vice President.


Montgomery County

Luke Whetzel

Luke is a 7th grader at Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in Woodstock, where he is a member of FFA, and the school’s meats judging and basketball teams. He also plays AAU travel basketball for Winchester Elite. When not on the court, Luke loves to be outdoors riding 4-wheelers, hunting, or fishing.

Shenandoah County

Ryan Borer

Ryan lives in Botetourt county on a family farm with his two parents. He is a senior at James River High School and will be attending Hutchinson Community College in the fall as a member of their livestock judging team. Ryan shows pigs, cattle, and sheep all across the country and enjoys fishing in his spare time. Ryan aspires to be a large animal veterinarian that specializes in livestock chiropractic medicine.

Frederick County

Sarah Craun

Sarah is an 8th grader at Wilbur Pence Muddle School, where she currently serves as Secretary of her FFA chapter. Sarah is active in 4-H, showing market lambs, market hogs, beef cattle and dairy heifers. She enjoys participating in Livestock Judging, Stockmans, Dairy Bowl, and Public Speaking competitions. She is currently Secretary of her 4-H club and a Director for the VA Jr Holstein Association. Sarah also plays JV and travel volleyball.
